Tricking, manipulating and posing an unsetting question: is your brain
telling you the truth? These, among others, are offered at the "Brain"
exposition at Palace of Culture and Science (in Warsaw); the main
attraction there, though, is the possibility of using your thoughts -
and thoughts only - to control a robot. I'm going to see if it's
really working.
Electrodes on the head utilise these cables to send signal to the
amplifier (?), from there the signal goes to the computer which
displays brainwaves on the fly. It's an electroencephalogram - a
brain's electric activity imprint. However, it's not only brain that's
working using electricity in our body. Muscles use it as well; an eye
is a electric dipole. These other signals can (and do) impose a strong
(static?) noise on the signals coming from the brain to electrodes
(placed) on the head. E.g. if one would exercise a comical muscle
action now, the EEG underneath would basically get invisible. The
signal coming from brain dissolved in this big noise. Yet, we can also
measure the real brain electric activity imprint - and first of those
electric thought tracks was the alpha wave, still called a Berger's
wave; a graceful Alpha shows up, with the frequency probably around 10
Hz. But we can measure it, the computer will show us the spectrum, one
can see a beautiful 10 Hz sharp peak in the spectrum. But when we open
our eyes, the alpha wave disappears, alongside the sharp 10Hz peak
from the spectrum.
Yes, we can see the 10 Hz is gone now. It's regular, resting-state
EEG. This here is definitely brain activity. On
that what comes from the brain to the surface of the head, we base the
real Brain-Computer Interfaces. Because a Brain-Computer Interface is
a device that enables one to communicate with the outside world
without muscle activity. Waves such as these, coming from the brain,
are used. It would be much easier to base on such interferences like
wide smile, or, or rolling one's eyes, but that wouldn't be a
Brain-Computer Interface. Many of the devices advertised and dubbed as
simple Brain-Computer Interfaces work using such signals. We are now
trying to get a read on something improbable - one of the first few
physical correlates of the conscioussness process, process of
concentrating in the history of humankind. What we can see on the
display here, are consecutive, blinking letters. The computer will
guess at which of them Karolina is concentrating, that is is thinking
about one, not about another.
It's not about at which one she is looking, but about which one is she
thinking about. Preferably by counting the times a letter blinked -
and here, on the EEG, we have marked consecutive ticks in which the
given letters blinked. The computer knows when and which letter
blinked and the task now is to focus attention on a particular letter,
so the computer knows. On that basis the computer learns
the specific shapes of the brainwaves corresponding to focusing
attention - so called Evoked Potentials (EP's). And, after such a
calibration, computer will be able to anticipate what would happen
when Karolina focuses on a particular, on a particular letter or on a
particular button. Computer takes that data and transmits it to the
robot with a camera that is riding through a labyrinth. It looks like
a toy, matter of fact it is a toy, that robot with camera, but now
imagine, that this EEG cap is placed on a patient with a
neurodegenerative disease that turned off his or hers ability of
controlling any muscles, any kind of contacting the outside world - a
robot like this could secure his or her telepresence and therefore
could provide the contact with the outside world.
Um, on the screen here I have four buttons tagged as:
left, forward, right, backward. And crazy scientists here tell me that
if I just focus and stare at, e.g. the backward button, the drone will
actually fly backward.
Congratulations! It is flying! It doesn't sing, though, but it flies.
And it flies like Karolina, well, not as she thinks, but it flies as
she focuses her attention to tell the computer the command. Yes, the
drone flies controlled exclusively by brainwaves.
Okay, we've succeeded, I managed to live through, it didn't hurt and,
in addition, the whole experiment worked, so if someone would like to
experience something similar, one can do it during weekends, at the
"Brain" exposition at Palace of Culture and Science (in Warsaw). Up to
the 5th of July one can wear such a sexy cap there.
