Soldering iron cleaner

The idea came from an old Tektronix video about soldering, that someone posted to one of the Matrix channels. About 11:44 it describes an advanced soldering iron cleaning station, which features layered rotating sponge that automatically gets wet in a basin of water below:

We made our own version.

BOM

  • 1× aluminium pipe for the axle, ⌀12 mm × 71 mm ± 0.4 mm
    • (you can change the diameter to whatever you have on hand, but then you need to change the journal on which it rests in the print)
  • 4× sponge ⌀70 mm × 16 mm, internal ⌀12 mm (or whatever axle you got)
    • cellulose, sulphur-free
    • you can buy rectangular, 120 mm × 75 mm and cut on the laser cutter; the offcuts you can use for tumble dryer

Ping woju on matrix if you'd like one set, I've got 2 cartons of the sponges and several spare aluminium pipes.

Varia

Consider using a cup that comes with clothes iron to fill the basin with water (see the picture).
