Desks

Cables

IMPORTANT: Please keep the desk tidy. If you need some extra cable, adapter, charger for your work, PUT IT BACK after you're done. Tidy up after others, too. Desks should only have essentials on them - the Thunderbolt 3 dock cable, maybe one or two USB-C PD charging cables and maybe a HDMI for the monitor.

Thunderbolt docks

ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock attached to the desk

Most desks are equipped with a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AC0135EU). A single cable can give you:

  • 60W USB PD charging power
  • display connection (up to 4k@60Hz over DisplayPort + optional 1080p second display over HDMI)
  • wired Ethernet connection
  • a USB A connection on the front

You are encouraged to use this if you can, instead of using your own charger and messing with display and network cables. This helps us keep the desks tidy.

Compatibility: Should work out of the box with any laptop that has Thunderbolt 3+ / USB4+ support. It does NOT support (non-Thunderbolt) USB-C fallback for data and display (but will still charge your device).

NixOS shenanigans: TODO, informatic

Important: The Thunderbolt 3 cable needs to be attached at the back of the device. Do NOT move it elsewhere.

Power

A power strip attached to the desk

Each desk has (or is planned to have) two power strips: one on the desk (for temporarily attached devices), and one underneath the desk (infra power strip).

Devices that stay on the desk permanently (TB3 dock power supply, displays, and the top power strip) should be plugged in to the infra power strip. Yes, it's a bit annoying to reach. Please spend an extra 30 seconds to keep cable management tidy.

Each desk should only have two cables (power and Ethernet) going outside the desk to the nearest wall outlet, so that desks can be easily moved as whole units for events.
